Every worker has the right to carry out their duties in an environment that is safe. Be it in construction, window cleaning, tree surgery, or any other industry where employees operate in an elevated environment, the consequences of a simple trip or slip are much more severe than they would be back on ground level. At Fall Arrest, we understand that no company wants to compromise the wellbeing of their workforce, which is why our key objective is to work with businesses to prevent serious and fatal injuries that can result from falling from a height. Height safety training is an essential first step where this is concerned, and with our training, workers will learn how to properly use the personal protective equipment that they should also be issued with, and that we can supply. Those who undertake the course will be taught the fundamental rules of height safety and procedure, gaining an industry-standard qualification upon successful completion. We offer consultancy and support to ensure that each business we work with is well-equipped with all the very best and most suitable equipment for each unique working environment. This, along with the height safety courses that we run, enables workers to take responsibility for their own immediate safety, meaning employers can have confidence every time they take on a job. To discover how we can help you create a safe working environment for all of your employees, explore the services we offer on our website or give our friendly staff a call.

Working at height can be a very risky business. Indeed, any professional that works high above ground level puts themselves at risk every time they carry out their aerial tasks as they are only ever one fall away from a significant or even fatal injury.

Of course, professionals who work at height can help to lessen such risks by ensuring they carry out their tasks in a methodical and super-diligent manner. However, it is the responsibility of aerial workers’ employers to ensure there are measures in place that will help to safeguard their well-being while they are working at height.

One of the most effective ways in which employers can achieve this is by providing their aerial operatives with effective personal protective equipment e.g. fall arrest harnesses. Furthermore, employers can also send staff members who work at height on informative height safety training courses so that they can learn more about the methodology behind safe working at height practices and develop a greater understanding of how to better eliminate the risks they face.

Here at FallArrest, we provide equipment and training solutions that can help employers everywhere to keep their aerial workers safe and well. Our outstanding fall protection measures are designed to the very highest standards and of course comply fully with all current legislation. In addition, our excellent training courses deliver pertinent information in a way that is immediately accessible and relevant so aerial workers from all backgrounds are always guaranteed to learn something new.

Around 4,000 people a year suffer a serious injury or death following a fall from height. The best way to avoid these accidents is to take part in fall arrest courses which will provide you with the necessary knowledge and skills. The equipment you use is also an important part of your safety. Below is a list of some of the equipment that should be used when working at height.

Fall arrest harness – a good quality, heavy duty harness is required when working at height. It will keep you secure and well supported. The material needs to be strong and durable and be able to withstand working in all conditions. Don’t scrimp when buying a harness, it could be the difference between life and death.
Lanyard – a flexible lanyard is necessary to connect the operative’s harness to the anchor and should only be used on a level surface. The lanyard isn’t designed to take the entire weight of the worker – however, it can prevent the worker from entering an area where a fall could occur.

Anchor – the anchor is a really important part of the kit for working at height. The anchor is a fixed structure to which the rest of the kit is rigged, through a connector. The anchor provides a stable base so the operative is able to carry out their work securely. One of the most important components of the anchor is the rope grab which minimises the distance a worker would fall and the impact it would have on the anchor.

There is a vast array of personal protective equipment (PPE) on the market, and unless you buy it from a reputable dealer, you might not be getting the best and safest equipment. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) require employers to supply their employees with the necessary PPE to protect them whilst carrying out their duties. PPE can range from steel toe capped boots to lanyards and inertia reels.

All equipment must carry the ‘CE’ mark which means that it complies with the Personal Protection Equipment Regulation 2002. This marking means that the product has passed safety tests conducted by an independent tester and meets certain standards.

Of course, just having the right equipment isn’t enough – the right training to use it is needed too. PPE training is designed to be ongoing, continuously educating people on the latest and safest way to use equipment and also to introduce any new equipment that comes onto the market. PPE training ensures that everyone is able to confidently use the equipment that they use at work safely.

The majority of workplace injuries can be avoided with the correct equipment and the right training. However, it takes commitment from both the employer and employees to remember their training and apply it to their jobs every day to avoid accidents. It is in the employer’s interest to make sure that PPE is used and training is followed, as public opinion of the company and employee morale could take a seriously hit if there was a serious accident.

In this age, where compensation claims are rife and companies are sued over even the most minor infraction, it is important for employers to protect themselves and their employees from injury and loss of life. Fortunately, there are ways and means of significantly reducing this risk.

By enrolling yourself and your employees on work at height training courses, you are taking the first, vital steps in protecting your employees and therefore your company from potentially damaging compensation claims. Here at Fall Arrest, we provide height safety training tailored to your company’s specific needs. We will teach your employees how to use their equipment properly and how to check it for damage and other wear and tear. With the proper fall arrest training, everyone working on your site will be competent at keeping themselves and others safe, reducing the risk of accidents.

Health and safety is a major factor, especially in the construction industry so it is vital for training to be undertaken by everyone working on the site to ensure the safety of everyone in the vicinity. It is the responsibility of everyone working on the site to be aware of and adhere to the strict health and safety guidelines put in place to avoid accidents, both major and minor. By not adhering to these rules or ensuring all staff are qualified to work at height, the company could be putting themselves in a potentially dangerous situation by leaving themselves open to libel action if the worst were to happen.
