The Confined Vessel Entry course takes place over three days when including rescue breathing apparatus, though there are also one day refresher courses available for more experienced individuals. Training takes place at the customer’s site or training facility and intake will be between six and eight delegates per class. The course is designed for workers who will be making entry into vertical or horizontal confined spaces within manufacturing, paper making, process, storage or chemical facilities.

By the end of the course delegates will be able to identify a formal confined space and understand the roles of various persons within the confined space management and entry plan. Attendees will become familiar with the layout of a risk assessment and safe system of work, and will have used a range of equipment during access and egress of a confined space.

Classroom content includes studying confined space legislation, classification, listing & categorisation of site specific confined spaces, and development of location-specific rescue plans. The practical side of the course involves use of continuous gas detection apparatus, selection of equipment, entry into vertical and horizontal vessels and communication.

Delegates will be continuously assessed during the course and will be formally observed during the development, access and egress stages. Observation criteria will be recorded and an action plan developed where delegates do not meet all requirements during the session.

Upon successful completion of the training, delegates will be issued with a certificate confirming their passing of a confined vessel entry course. This certificate will be valid for three years from the date of issue.

Please note that if this is a site delivered course then site management must make a suitable confined space available. Also, where the site uses their own confined space equipment it is necessary to ensure it is currently within the scope of a statutory inspection scheme which addresses all personal protective equipment and manufacturers’ requirements and recommendations.
